5 GHz WiFi, 802.11ac: Wireless Networking

The 5.3-5.8 GHz frequency band is the second most popular range today for wireless networks. Although it is used in considerably fewer applications than the 2.4 GHz band, 5 GHz does have some advantages over the lower-frequency band.

Advantages of 5 GHz band

Disadvantages

Wireless network designers often choose to deploy 2.4/5 GHz dual-band wireless networks, increasing the complexity of their network solutions, but also allowing them to enjoy benefits associated with utilizing both frequency bands.

L-com produces thousands of different types of 5 GHz and dual-band connectivity products to address any wireless networking challenge, whether you are designing a network from the ground up or tweaking the performance of a current system.

Solutions

WiFi/WLAN

Today, the vast majority of Wi-Fi and WLAN communication devices utilize the 2.4 GHz frequency band. This results in signal overcrowding, which can severely impact wireless performance. 802.11a and 802.11n networks operating in the 5 GHz range, however, experience far less overcrowding and often produce superior wireless network performance.

Newer 802.11ac technologies utilizing the 5 GHz frequency band require high performance wireless connectivity products designed to support Gigabit wireless speeds and greater distance coverage.

L-com offers a wide selection of wireless products to meet the requirements of 5 GHz networks. We manufacture antennas, RF amplifiers, splitters, filters and more, a full product line designed to address the installation, expansion and replacement of modern 5 GHz network installations.

WMAN/WISP

Wireless metropolitan area networks (WMANs) often suffer from performance degradation problems due to signal overcrowding in the common 2.4 GHz frequency band.

To help limit this overcrowding and congestion, WMAN service providers and metropolitan wireless internet service providers (WISPs) often implement 5 GHz “back haul” links to interconnect their 2.4 GHz networks, improving network performance and end user experience.

L-com manufactures high quality 5 GHz networking products to address the demanding requirements of today’s WMANs.
